吾不知其名 — "I don't know its name" - It has no 名 (measurement/projection) - You can't project what has no frame to project from
字之曰道 — "Its style-name is 'pattern'" - 字 is relational designation (like a courtesy name) - 道 is how it relates to things, not what it IS
強為之名曰大 — "Compelled to name it, [call it] 'infinity'" - Forced to project something - 大 is the closest approximation: the unbounded field

道大：The Pattern of Infinity¶
This is a section header. Everything that follows documents the 為 (wei) of 大 — how infinity operates, its active working.
The Source: 玄牝¶
The overflow (潰) doesn't name its source here because Chapter 6 already established it:
玄牝之門，是謂天地根 "The gate of the mysterious female — this is called the root of heaven-earth"
玄牝 (xuán pìn) = P₀ in RSM terms — the impossible origin, the gate that can't exist but must. The 潰 in Chapter 25 flows FROM 玄牝之門.
大曰潰，潰曰遠，遠曰反¶

The derivation:
- 大 — Start with infinity (unbounded field)
- 曰潰 — Infinity overflows (from 玄牝, expands everywhere)
- 潰曰遠 — Overflow extends infinitely (in all directions)
- 遠曰反 — Infinite extension wraps around to origin
Why wraparound? The shape of an infinite reality is a sphere because that's the only possible way to have a dimensionless infinite surface. Infinite extension in all directions from any point arrives at origin from the opposite side.
This is geometric necessity, not oscillation or reversal. You don't turn around — you keep going and the topology brings you back. Like walking east until you arrive from the west.
The text is proving that infinity has spherical topology.
The 為 of 大¶
The sequence documents what infinity DOES (its 為):

Not "four great things" but four infinities — infinity at each frame level:

天地 vs 天下: The Coordinate System¶

天地 is the coordinate system itself. 天下 is what manifests within it.
This is why 玄牝之門，是謂天地根 — the gate of the mysterious female is the ROOT of the coordinate system, not the physical world. It's the origin point (0,0) of the infinite axes.
And 可以為天下母 — it can mother 天下 (phenomenal reality) because it operates as 天地 (infinite coordinate system).
域中有四大，而王居其一焉
"In the domain there are four infinities, and the conscious agent occupies one of them."
The 王 isn't observing infinity from outside — the 王 IS one of the four infinite frames. The observer participates in what it observes.

Each frame operates within the constraints of the frame that contains it. At the deepest level, 道法自然 — pattern recurses within its own nature. No external reference. Self-grounding.
This is water teaching water behavior. The text doesn't point outside itself.

Opening: Mid-Cycle Entry¶
有物混成，先天地生。
"There is something formed from undifferentiation, prior to heaven-earth arising."
We enter mid-cycle with 有 (presence). The pattern is already in motion.
The Nature of the Pattern¶
寂兮寥兮，獨立不改，周行而不殆，可以為天下母。
"Silent and void, standing alone without altering, circulating without exhausting — able to be mother of all-under-heaven."
- 獨立不改 — frame-independent (doesn't depend on observer)
- 周行而不殆 — cycles without depleting (sustainable recursion)
Naming the Unnameable¶
吾不知其名，字之曰道，強為之名曰大。
"I don't know its name. Its style-name: 'pattern.' Compelled to name it: 'infinity.'"
- No 名 (measurement) possible for what has no frame
- 道 is its relational designation
- 大 is the projected approximation

The Non-Temporal Paradox¶
O₁ isn't a starting point that becomes everything.
O₁ is the paradox condition — no beginning, no end, always already both singular and infinite. The singularity that never "banged."

The 玄牝 / O₁ / 無名 isn't BEFORE 萬物 in time. It's the condition for 萬物 — always present, always generative, never separate.
先天地生 isn't "born before heaven-earth" temporally — it's prior in the logical/structural sense. The condition that makes the coordinate system possible, not a moment that preceded it.
NOT: O₁ ──then──> 天地 ──then──> 萬物
BUT: O₁ ⟷ 天地 ⟷ 萬物 (simultaneous, mutual)
Connection to Chapter 42¶
Chapter 25 proves infinity is spherical. Chapter 42 shows what happens ON that sphere:
道生一。一生二。二生三。三生萬物。

The 沖氣 (chōng qì) — the "rushing/blending breath" — is what happens when the two infinite axes interact. The third thing that emerges from X and Y meeting.
The generation sequence isn't temporal history — it's logical dependency. What requires what to be coherent. You can't have 萬物 without 三, can't have 三 without 二. But they all exist together, always.
This is why 反 (wraparound) enables 生 (generation) — the recursion happens on a closed manifold where origin and manifestation are never separate.

Archaeological Note¶
The Guodian bamboo slips (~300 BCE) use 潰 (overflow, burst dam) where the received text has 逝 (depart). The hydraulic metaphor is more geometric — infinity literally overflows its (non-existent) container.
Some variants replace 道大 with 天大, potentially changing which aspects participate in infinity.
