天下有始,以為天下母。

既得其母,以知其子;既知其子,復守其母,沒身不殆。

Having obtained the mother, thereby know the children. Having known the children, return to guarding the mother— to the end of life, no peril.

塞其兌,閉其門,終身不勤。

Block its openings, close its gates— to the end of life, no toil.

開其兌,濟其事,終身不救。

Open its openings, involve in affairs— to the end of life, no remedy.

Part 5: Seeing Small, Guarding Yielding

見小曰明,守柔曰強。

Seeing the small is called clarity. Guarding the yielding is called strength.

This is paradox-resolution from Chapter 41: what appears as its opposite from misaligned frames is actually the thing itself.


Part 6: Using Light, Returning to Clarity

用其光,復歸其明,無遺身殃。

Use its light, return to its clarity— leave no disaster for oneself.

無遺身殃 = "leave no disaster for oneself." 遺 = leave behind, bequeath. 殃 = calamity.

Using light while returning to clarity leaves no accumulated damage. The cycle completes without residue.


Part 7: The Name

是為習常。

This is called practicing the constant.

Open the holes, meddle in affairs, and till the end of your days you will be beyond saving. Seeing what is small is called insight. Guarding what is soft is called strength. Use the light to return to insight and leave yourself no source of harm. This is called following the constant."
